MinnesotaTimberwolves free agency: Small Forwards

Without knowing who will be on the roster next season, aside from the few players that we already know — Karl-Anthony Towns, Zach LaVine, Andrew Wiggins, Ricky Rubio, Shabazz Muhammad, Nikola Pekovic, Nemanja Bjelica, Gorgui Dieng and Tyus Jones.

I’m not even sure Pekovic or Muhammad will survive the draft, but let’s say they do. Minnesota will have $50,242,401 under contract for next season.

The best news for them? The salary cap will jump up to $92 million this summer.

That first total doesn’t include Kevin Garnett’s $8 million, but even including that, the Timberwolves will have money to spend.

First, let’s look at the roster breakdown.

PG: Ricky Rubio, Tyus Jones/Zach LaVine

SG: Zach LaVine/Shabazz Muhammad

SF: Andrew Wiggins/Shabazz Muhammad

PF: Gorgui Dieng/Nemanja Bjelica/Kevin Garnett

C: Karl-Anthony Towns/Nikola Pekovic

Despite having the No. 5 pick in the draft, Minnesota needs some depth up front and at guard.

Small forward options: With Wiggins being the future as small forward, Minnesota will be looking for depth at this position. Signing Kevin Durant isn’t out of the realm of possibility, but it isn’t very likely. Minnesota could be a sexy attraction because of the potential, and Durant would certainly put this team over the top, but I think he will opt to stay with his championship-ready team, or one that has already won one or two. Nicolas Batum will re-sign with Charlotte, so the attention will shift to another former Bull — Luol Deng. He rejuvenated his career once he was moved to the power forward spot, and might continue to excel there even if Minnesota signs him. His familiarity with Thibodeau and appreciation for him, makes him a likely candidate to arrive in the Twin Cities. Marvin Williams really found himself this past season in Charlotte. His ability to finally space the floor and play both forward spots will make him an intriguing player this offseason. His price tag won’t be extremely high, but it won’t be cheap either.

It would be nice to add a small/power forward combo player, who is reliable, so Wiggins can get a little more of a break.
