Despite missing several superstars who were present in the 2008 Games, the 2012 USA Basketball Team still has a lot of talent. LeBron James and Kevin Durant are coming off career-years and a Finals showdown. USA still has Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Deron Williams from the 2008 team as well. Their journey to capturing the Gold Medal starts tonight in Las Vegas.
There has been a lot of talk over the past day and a half about whether this 2012 Olympic Team could beat the 1992 Dream Team. I don’t want to get into that discussion quite yet because this 2012 team has a lot to conquer. They lack front-court depth and losing Blake Griffin today during a scrimmage doesn’t help matters. But what they lack in size they make-up for with speed, strength and talent.
Tonight the USA Team will take on the Dominican Republic in Las Vegas, Nevada on ESPN. This is the first of several pre-Olympic games the USA will have before they reach London. Even though the game probably won’t be close tonight, it’s still a game and the USA can still improve their team chemistry, continuity and unity. Coach Mike Krzyzewski will use this game, and a few other games, to figure out what lineups work best and where the team needs to improve.
No question that Team USA will be the favorite to take home the gold, but it will be far from easy.
I will have more as we get closer to the start of the Olympics.
